In Memory of
Charles Tonking

1961 - 2003

"Charlie was one of the first guys to extend his friendship to me on an STMC ride. Those first few rides with the group, it was so nice to have someone smile and say "Hey, good to see you!"
--Chad Groshart

"I still can't quite grasp that we've lost him. I didn't know him well, but I too remember his warm smile and instant camaraderie. I admit I used to enjoy bumming a cigarette from him and just 'shootin' the breeze' with him. We will miss you Charlie T." --Mark Yeldham

"He was like a brother to me. I met him in the summer of '82. It was because of Chuck's enthusiasm about motorcycles that finally prompted me get one of my own. I will miss Chuck and his spirit." --Chris Rose

"...words cannot express the loss that I feel. I will never forget Charlie's warm smile, him lighting up a cigarette at a rest stop standing beside his ride on a Sunday Ride and him kickin' ass at Louden.  Honkin Tonkin, I will miss you!" --Bruce Egenhauser

"...it was clear that Charles lived every minute of his life to it's fullest. I didn't know that he was a mountain and ice climber, that he had explored mountain passes on Telemark skis, and that he'd had so many friends. One of the nicest fellows I've met over the years. We will all miss him a lot."
--Barry Ellman

"I didn't get to ride with Charlie very often, but one occasion does stand out. It was 2001 Ramapo 500... and not 25 miles into the ride, I hit a pothole that bent the front rim resulting in an instant flat. It took just minutes for Charlie to get back to me after realizing I wasn't behind him. He helped me survey the damage... and reassured me that he would stick around for as long as I needed help. Couldn't have asked for more. We will miss Charlie, but are better and stronger for having had the good fortune to know him." --Jim Judd

"He struck me as a humble guy, never bragging about his accomplishments on the track. He was the same way on STMC rides, usually riding in the back and not pushing himself to the front like some of us, including me, sometimes do. Just four weeks ago, I rode behind him as he led four of us back from lunch... Although, sometimes we got a little lost, we had a great time. I was surprised to receive an e-mail from him the next day apologizing for the fact that by the time we got home, it was already dark. That’s the kind of man he was." --Allon Mor

"We had two excellent days at the track.... Charlie had several observations on how to improve my track riding and I did my best to implement his tips. Just before we left on the 2nd day-Charlie appeared with a BBQ sandwich for me-by this time I wasn't surprised at his casual generosity-just seemed natural to him... Charlie drove every mile out and back, through some nasty traffic and never complained for an instant-I did enough of that for the both of us... I feel fortunate to have spent those precious days with him." --Doug Tuero
